Hall Dental Studio, a South Nashville dental practice serving the community for more than 40 years, is pointing to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research's TMD IMPACT Initiative as validation for the individualized, multi-modal approach it already applies to jaw pain patients. The federally funded effort, the largest of its kind to date, is steering the field toward team-based care rather than single-fix treatment.

Largest Federal TMD Study Points Toward Individualized Care
The TMD IMPACT Initiative includes a 1,000-patient study through the University of Pittsburgh's CREATE Center, backed by a $17 million grant, with enrollment expanding across five U.S. research sites this year. The initiative promotes team-based, individualized treatment as the emerging standard for temporomandibular disorders — a departure from generic pain-management protocols that treat every jaw pain case the same way.
Jaw pain rarely has a single cause.

Hall Dental Studio's TMJ Model Reflects the Same Principles
Hall Dental Studio's lead dentist trained for more than three years under H. Clifton Simmons III, a recognized non-surgical TMJ specialist, and built that training into a comprehensive TMJ care model centered on identifying the specific source of each patient's discomfort before recommending treatment.
-
Prolotherapy and PRP/PRF injections to support tissue-level healing
-
Laser therapy to reduce inflammation and target pain directly
-
3D CT scanning and digital bite analysis to pinpoint the source of dysfunction
-
Custom-fitted occlusal guards for grinding-related joint strain
"This national research confirms an approach we've followed for years — treating the joint, the bite, and the whole patient, not just the symptom in front of us," said Dr. Jon Mark Thompson, DDS, Owner and Lead Dentist of Hall Dental Studio.
Treating the symptom isn't the same as treating the cause.
